The themes of Identity and the corrupting power of slavery are shown continuously in the movie Twelve Years a Slave and the books The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, and Incidents in the Live of the Slave Girl. The theme of Identity is shown countless time throughout these pieces in the example of breaking down the slaves till they have no identity. The corrupting power of slavery is the main theme above all because in both the books and movie they depict the power of the masters towards the slaves and how they break them down. All the themes listed above play a massive role for the stories involved within Twelve Years a Slave and the books The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, and Incidents in†¦show more content†¦In the book The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Equiano was born with no identity since he was not allowed one in early life, but he strived to shape one despite his situation. Equiano was invisible, he was a no one, he had no control of his actions, name, and life. Equiano from early on came to discover who he was, but slavery blocked him from self-discovery. After he paid his way to freedom, however, Equiano was finally able to create himself an identity and discover a real sense of self. He began to start making his own decisions regarding where he went and what employment opportunities he pursued. Since he acquired skills at sea he was able to prove his worth at sea and gained the approbation of those around him. Equiano converted to Christianity and began to see his life in terms of religion. He got involved with the abolitionist movement and entered the world of the British Empire movement. He eventually published his autobiography about the story of his life. This work asserted that Olaudah Equiano was a man, a British citizen, and a Christian. Equiano thus developed an identity formed from his experiences at sea, his conversion to Christianity, and his movements in the B ritish Empire. It is a unique individual identity that he made for himself, not obliged to any one creed but instead filled with an open world of options.
