Another important thing to consider is the employees' work status, whether they are full-time, contractual, or under a labor bargaining agreement. Each person on the list could file for discrimination when terminated because each one of them falls under the protected minority. Before FastServe will have to choose the final three people for termination, the company must talk to each one of them and give them time to defend themselves or improve on weak areas. Even if the layoff is not on a large scale basis and would not violate the WARN Act, or the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, it still would be humane and preventing legal actions if the company would do this act. Carl Haimes – Retain Of all the employees on the list, Carl Haimes has the best record. His overall track record performance is above average, the highest and only one in the group. In terms of productivity, he also scored above the median, which is what the company would like to see among its employees. In terms of education, Haimes has a degree in Information Systems, a skill that is useful in marketing. He is also a qualified systems analyst, an important asset to a marketing company that needs to have marketing systems in place. Haimes' computer maintenance skills and LAN installation skills for three platforms will come handy for the maintenance of the company's databases and electronic marketing portfolio. Haimes will also be useful when the company will be automating its systems. Strictly from skills and qualifications, Haimes is a clear candidate for retention. To improve Haimes' chances for retention, no one has made any complaint on his behavior or work ethics. Moreover, the company has no problem with his attendance, the only one in the group. Haimes' contract need not be an issue since the company would be retaining him. Haimes is gay and his sexual orientation could become a problem in conservative and traditional companies. Retaining Haimes would benefit the company because of his skills, qualifications and adherence to company policies. Should Brian passed the medical tests, then, FastServe cannot terminate him because of this problem. Brian cannot continue with his employment with FastServe for various reasons even if he does not suffer from a wrist problem. First, Brian's skills are highly specialized and limited to programming, which is very useful in the online distribution channels but not on direct marketing. Brian, being a techie guy, is unlikely to fit in a direct marketing kind of work even if he had a chance to train for marketing-related functions. Sarah Boyd – Retain Sarah Boyd is the second employee that FastServe should retain. She's with the company for 15 years and her status is full time. Her overall track performance is average while her productivity is median. Sarah is capable of managing and administering an office, skills that are useful in a marketing company. Also, she's the only person who knows office procedure better than anyone else. Her prioritizing and sorting skills could become redundant when the company will automate its processes. However, it would take time for the automation to be implemented. While waiting for that time, Sarah could continue doing her job and she could be taught other skills. Besides, Sarah is 53 years old and protected under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. So long as Sarah is able and capable of doing her tasks, the company can't make her retire against her will. However, should the company find the need to replace Sarah when she reaches 55 years old, FastServe could offer her an early retirement package that is attractive, fair and equitable. Nora Manson – Terminate Nora Manson's overall performance is above average but her productivity is below median. The company is currently focused on high productivity from their employees and Nora falls short of that goal. There is also the question of Nora's absenteeism that has already accumulated into two months. This is very high and would raise questions on her job loyalty. Another point against Nora is on her loyalty to FastServe. She has been directing employees to file discrimination complaints against the company she works for. Nora's participation in discrimination charges against FastServe is protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These acts may be in accordance to her personal values and are protected by law but these do not show loyalty to FastServe. Being an advocate of fair treatment need not mean going to the labor court right away. Nora could have acted as intermediary to prevent labor suits. On the positive side, Nora has rescued two big accounts and is skilled in handling irate and upset callers. She's also skilled in other aspects of making sales. Despite her positive contributions, Nora is too radical to become an asset to the company. While the company cannot take it against her to be watchful of discrimination, her work shouldn't have been affected by all of her non-work related activities. Her activities with her affiliation could have been the reason why Nora's productivity is low. FastServe should end Nora's employment so long as her contract allows the company to do that. If the employment is for a definite period of time, then the company can use her performance, productivity and absenteeism problems as the ground for her termination. However, the company should be prepared to handle discrimination complaints that Nora may file against it considering that she is an African-American and is an active member of NAACP. Jenny Mills – Terminate Jenny Mills should also be terminated. Although the law prohibits termination of women because of pregnancy, the company won't be ending Jenny's employment because of that. She is on contract and her attendance is very bad. She is also taking extra breaks that are not supposedly allowed and this make male employees complain. Jenny cannot use as an excuse her pregnancy for the 14 days of absence in a period of one month. Pregnancies are mostly difficult in the first two months and once a woman is already beyond that, her condition would be better. Jenny is already five months pregnant and there are no indications that it is a difficult pregnancy. Although she holds a degree in public relations, she has no special achievements. Her skills are also limited to answering queries from customers and troubleshooting common instruments problems. These skills can easily be taught to other persons. The third letter that Walton sends simply expresses confidence in his quest: I write a few lines in haste to say that I am safe and well advanced on my voyage. Shelley may have decided to add a short letter to show that Walton maybe playing down the dangers of his voyage. He finishes the letter by saying: Heaven bless my beloved sister. This clearly shows that Walton is a caring person.  The fourth letter is when Walton catches a glimpse of the creature. The crew take Victor on board. Walton believes that he has found a friend in Victor, and confides his ambition. In some ways Walton can be seen as a double to Victor Frankenstein. Walton rebels against his fathers decision for him to not go to sea. Walton decides against the life of ease, he explains that My life might have been passed in ease and luxury, he explains, but I preferred glory to every enticement that wealth placed in my way. Shelley has added this to show a relationship between Victor and Walton. This shows that they have similar characteristics, and desire the same things from life. The fact that Walton is introduced before Frankenstein may show that Shelley was preparing the reader for Victors desire for knowledge. Although the two characters can be related to each other, they also have significant differences. Walton is not quite so alienated as Victor. Rather then rejecting companionship, Walton longs for an intimate friend to share his hopes and dreams. To add to this point, Walton is also is not so isolated in his search for knowledge, whereas Victor, whose midnight labours and secret toil keep him completely secluded. The fact that Walton had a crew around him prevented him from falling into the trap of Victors individualism. The first chapter begins in an embedded narrative, with Victor telling his story to Walton. Victor begins his story by describing his early life in Geneva, his tranquil domestic life and the young orphan Elizabeth, who becomes part of the household. Victors interest in science eventually takes him to university at Inglostadt. His experiments lead him to the discovery of a secret life force. He constructs a human form out of dead tissue and brings it to life. Horrified by his actions, Victor abandons the creature. One of the main themes portrayed by Shelley in this novel is that of birth and creation. When Victor gave life to the creature, he usurps the role of God. Victor imagines how, A new species would bless me as its creator and source No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs. This shows that Victors main crime is not what he had done, but what he failed to do. He failed to father his creation. Victor is an isolated individual. However, unlike Walton, Frankensteins isolation is self imposed. It is also ironic in the sense that Victor rejects his family and friends, whilst this is simply what the creature longs for. Victor claims that the rejection of his family is necessary in order to continue the quest for the secret life. Alienation is a key factor in this novel. Victor chooses to isolate himself from others, whereas the creatures isolation is imposed upon him, due to Victor abandoning him, and people being generally scared of his appearance. However the creature does desire companionship, and he says that he becomes violent when he realises that he will never have this, I am malicious because I am miserable. This shows that the creature is humane in the sense that all he wants is a companion, much like any human. So the fact that the creature only becomes malicious because I am miserable represents that people become monstrous when the are isolated, and rejected from so ciety. When Victor creates the creature, he is flooded with a huge feeling of anti-climax. Victor repulses the creature on first sight. He refers to the creature as the wretch and is horrifies by the thing that he has given life to. This shows that Victor is only concerned with physical appearance. This shows intolerance of imperfection and a flaw in Victors character. Victor rejects the creation; this is like a father rejecting his child. When the creature came to life Victor may have realised the enormity of the monstrous deeds that he had committed. The passage in the novel shows Victor to be a monster, as he does not even try to understand the monsters cries for help. He has forsaken any duties he is expected to perform as a father. When the creature awoke from his sleep he convulsed. When Victor awakes from his sleep, his muscles also convulse. This could be one of the first signs that the creature is a double of Victor. Victor even describes the monster as my own spirit let loose from the grave forced to destroy all that was dear to me Victor has given a clear expression of the notion that he and the creature may be doubles, with the creature acting out Victors own aggressions. I have heard Canada described as a multicultural nation meaning that Canadians are not of any one cultural background, race or heritage. For all Canadians, including Aboriginal People, this multicultural diversity can be traced to an immigrant past. This does not mean that the majority of todays Canadians are immigrants but rather that the majority of Canadians have in their past, perhaps many generations ago, a family member who migrated here from another country. That is why many of us have a mixed ancestry, for example; Irish, Scottish, Ukrainian, French and Aboriginal, and the list can go on. Canadas Aboriginal People were the first to immigrate, and settle across the continent, tens of thousands of years before European settlers. After the European settlers came the French, followed by the English, Scots and Irish formulating Canada into the diverse country it is today. In the years before the American Civil War, thousands of black slaves escaped slavery in the United States by following the Underground Railway north to Canada. Then, at the turn of the century, American farmers moved northward into the Canadian prairies to develop farm lands. Although Canada originally consisted of a wide variety of immigrants, some people were not as welcome in the country as others and were therefore not treated equally. Those who were of different race, color, or religion then the majority of Canadians were labeled as foreigners. The use of the term foreigner held many connotations for example, different, strange or inferior and many at the time wanted to see the foreigners assimilate to fit into Canadian society. There are many events in Canadas past that has contributed to the racism and discrimination in Canada today for example, the disregard and unfair treatment of Aboriginal Peoples by Europeans who settled here. Even though a vast majority of African-Americans moved to Canada to avoid slavery, from early in the 1600s until 1834 there was a recorded 4092 slaves throughout the country, mostly living in Quebec . The Asiatic Exclusion League, which originated in California in 1905 as an anti-Oriental movement, moved north into Vancouver in 1907. The league was the main instigator in anti-Asian riots in the city since their main goal was to have all Chinese and Japanese immigrants removed from North America out of fear that they were taking jobs away from Whites . It also appears that throughout history the acceptance of immigrants in Canada greatly depended upon the economic state of the country at that time. During the Great Depression of the 1930s immigrants seeking jobs were unwelcome and overlooked for employment. Although the Government of Canada has made many advances in breaking the barriers that Aboriginal People, immigrants and minorities face in the country; immigrants today still face a number of problems when trying to enter the labor market, for example: ? Non-recognition of international credentials and work experience ? Lack of Canadian work experience ? Inability to communicate in English or French ?Insufficient labor market information prior to immigrating to Canada I have traveled to some of the major cities in Canada and was a little surprised by the degree of segregation that is apparent in these cities. By this, I mean that these larger cities, like Toronto and Vancouver, have communities which are almost completely independent from the rest of the country. These independent communities that I saw, of Chinese or Italian people, seemed to have everything they needed to survive within the community including their own schools. I could not help but wonder what effect this type of segregation has on the country. I respect the fact that all people are trying to protect their identity. At the same time, by choosing to live in Canada, shouldnt they try to integrate into the country a little more while still preserving their identities? Shouldnt they try to assimilate? How can Canada thrive as a country with so much segregation? We need to become a unified country. Not such a historical thought pattern, I guess!! It is people who have attitudes like mine that are causing problems in the country or do all people have these thoughts and choose not to admit it. I have similar negative feelings about scholarships being available only to certain people or government funding for certain people to attend university because they are a minority. I understand that differential treatment is required in order for equality to become a possibility. However, I still feel a degree of resentment about these programs being offered when I have to borrow money in an effort to obtain my university degree. Will this resentment evolve? When I hold a management position in the future, will I discriminate against a person because he or she doesnt have a huge student loan to pay and another does? It is cases like mine that causes racism to continue in society and the workplace today? With the announcement of Nova Scotias plan to increase immigration into the province came an increase in the racist comments I have heard. Since I work in bars I hear, and partake in, a great deal of conversation. When people are drinking they tend to be even more likely to say things they normally wouldnt. That is why I have heard, at times, some very racist remarks. People have said that the government should be trying to retain people in the province that are born here before they bring foreigners here. They need to take care of their own first!! It is because of these comments and feelings that I am doubtful that discrimination against people, because of their race or color, will ever be completely eliminated in the country. How do we achieve equality with so much differentiation? How do we check or personal opinions at the door when we go to work? Since it is impossible to eliminate racism and discrimination entirely in society, we need to do as much as possible to eliminate it in the workplace. We need to make changes similar to the changes companies have made in an effort to combat discrimination against people because of their religion. For example, adapting zero tolerance rules, providing more education for employees, human resource departments need to provide more opportunities for people of minorities, immigrants, and Aboriginal Peoples and barriers have to be removed for all these people who are trying to enter our labor market. March 21, 2005 is International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination a day to remember the struggles and challenges that Aboriginal peoples and people of color have endured. It is also a time to recognize and applaud the fact that members of these two communities have made anti-racism struggles a significant part of labors agenda. Reflection in practice is one of the skills necessary as a student of psychology. Reflective practice is a model applied in adult learning and educational teaching where there is application of various concepts of reflection to analyze real issues. According to Reid (1993, p.305), reflection involves critical understanding any experience that a professional goes through with an intention of giving a vivid description, an in depth analysis and latter conduct an evaluation. This will provide an avenue to be able to gauge what the learner has acquired as a result of the practice. The aim of reflective practice is to create a problem out of a learning situation. The act of solving the problem will provide the professionals with a good opportunity to research therefore acquire relevant knowledge and growth in their profession. Reflective practice imparts skills to learners not only to become a repetitive doer but also gain cognition of tackling different situations during practice. However, most centers of learning have well experienced lecturers and professors who supervise the students. As a result, I will be able to apply theoretical knowledge learnt in class to real life cases in the health center. As a result the brain is triggered to think and this provides an opportunity for old ideas to be incorporated with new situations in practice to have a solution. Detailing this information will guide me in enhancing my skills in critical thinking. A good atmosphere is necessary during supervision to minimize serious distractions due to the clients. John (2007, p.3), notes that effective supervision is necessary as it offers practical support, enhances the morale of learning process and also offers challenges to the students to be able to learn. Supervision is important in practice of psychology as it gives inputs in the following three areas; to begin with it provides technical support in practice to the students. As a result the student is encouraged to seek more knowledge on an issue and the end result is attainment of practical and reflective skills. Secondly, the student is able to apply the learnt theory into professional practice. This is also part of the educational or teaching process. The second challenge is finding a non conducive atmosphere at the place of placement. This gives the student a hard time and learning is hindered. As a solution collaborative efforts with my supervisor to talk with the management would at least solve that problem. Lastly, is difficulty in putting theory into practice due to lack of e xperience. This would be easily solved through consulting my supervisor and the specialists that are in charge of me.
